Um, I would guess that the French educational system has failed its population, but I'm afraid of what the outcome would have been in the US.
At the end of Battlestar Galactica season three, they show a shot of the earth as their final destination. The shot prominently displays North America. When the creators were asked if there is some significance to that, they responded that studies showed that most Americans would not have known it was supposed to be earth if the shot had shown any other continent. And then there is the show "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?" Yikes!
I'm glad that he knew it wasn't Mars or Venus, but more concerned that 2% thought it was Mars than half thought it was the moon...I mean sun.
I'm reminded of the Miss America pageant..."Maybe kids don't, uh, know blah blah blha because they, uh, don't have maps?"
Take it from a high school teacher who deals with average kids...
I'm not surprised.
We're used to spending time with other (relatively) intelligent people; people in our families, at the university, our friends that we met at the university or in honors classes. We forget that the average person out there isn't quite as bright.
I believe there's a study out there somewhere where this exact question was asked to Americans...
If I recall correctly, the results were pretty much the same.
Sad, really.
Okay, so I found a website for surveys in the US.
Realize that almost all of these are true/false questions...and because of that, a lot of people who got them right were guessing (I'd guess, if 25% guessed and got it wrong, another 25% guessed and got it right, and only 50% knew what they were talking about). Enjoy.
